For fans in the United States, understanding the key teams, players, and how to watch these big European football matches can enhance the experience of following the tournament.
How the 2026/27 Champions League League Phase Works
The league phase started in early September 2026 and includes 36 teams from across Europe’s top domestic leagues. Teams qualify through their league positions or by winning European competitions. This phase precedes knockout rounds and will determine who advances toward the final.
Notable Teams and Their Key Players
- Liverpool (England): Currently making lineup adjustments, Liverpool continues to rely on strong defensive options like Kostas Tsimikas, who is captaining the side during their match at LASK. Young talents like Trey Nyoni also emerge as valuable assets in this season’s squad [1].
- Paris Saint-Germain (France): PSG faces challenges with key defender Nuno Mendes sidelined due to a thigh injury, affecting their defense for the crucial match against Barcelona. Barcelona, meanwhile, are also missing defenders Jules Koundé and Eric García for this high-profile clash [2]. Luis Enrique’s PSG will need to adapt tactically to cover wide spaces, especially against Barcelona’s dangerous winger Lamine Yamal.
- Manchester City (England): After a thrilling 4-2 loss to PSG, City looks to bounce back at home against AEK Athens. Erling Haaland continues his excellent Champions League form, vital to City’s attacking efforts, while AEK will rely on creative midfielder Răzvan Marin. Fans can watch this matchup at 3 p.m. ET on October 20 [4].
- Atletico Madrid (Spain): In strong form domestically and in Europe, Atletico hosts Stuttgart with confidence. Strikers like Jonathan David and Ermedin Demirović are key players to watch. The match kicks off at 3 p.m. ET on October 20 and offers a test for both sides [6].
- Villarreal (Spain): Historically winless against English clubs in the Champions League, Villarreal face Liverpool at Anfield with the hope of ending that drought. USMNT defender Alex Freeman will be looking to make history in just his third Champions League appearance [3].
- Bundesliga teams: Defending champions Bayern Munich, led by coach Vincent Kompany and top striker Harry Kane, remain strong contenders aiming to capture UEFA’s top prize again. They’ve made key signings like Ismael Saibari to bolster their attack [5].
