On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a great white shark was witnessed breaching just off the shore at Marina State Beach in Monterey County, California. The rare and dramatic event was captured on video by local beachgoers, sparking widespread attention and prompting California State Parks to issue a shark advisory for the area.
Confirmed Sighting and Video Evidence
The breach was first captured on a mobile phone by Erin King, a local resident who was photographing friends on the beach when the shark suddenly leapt from the water behind them. King described the moment as happening “so fast,” with only a few people witnessing it firsthand [1].
Shortly thereafter, the video was corroborated by footage from a Surfline camera located at The Sanctuary Beach Resort nearby. The timestamps on the mobile phone video and the Surfline camera matched perfectly, providing strong independent confirmation that the breach was real and occurred at Marina State Beach [2].
Mike Dippel, Chief Ranger for California State Parks, noted that given the position and timing of the videos, it was “very likely to be the same shark” [1]. Despite the obvious identification of a breach, the exact species has not been confirmed, though experts indicated the behavior and timing are consistent with great white sharks in the Monterey Bay area during fall and winter months [2].
Seasonal Context and Shark Advisory
This sighting coincides with the peak “Sharktober” season—September through November—when adult great white sharks migrate closer to the California coast. During these months, great whites move from offshore locations known as the “White Shark Cafe” back toward feeding grounds such as Monterey Bay, Point Reyes, and the Farallon Islands [3]. This migration increases the chance of shark sightings and, occasionally, encounters with humans.
California State Parks has issued an advisory warning beachgoers to exercise caution when swimming or surfing in the Central Coast waters this time of year. The advisory will remain in effect through the end of the week, reflecting typical increased shark activity in October [1].
Public Reaction and Significance
The extraordinary footage has attracted millions of views across social media platforms, underscoring both the rarity and public fascination with observing such marine wildlife in action [2]. For those on the beach that day, including King and the young women she was photographing, the sighting was a memorable experience that left a lasting impression [1].
While great white shark sightings can understandably cause concern, experts emphasize that attacks are exceedingly rare. The seasonal migration and feeding behavior of these sharks are a natural part of the marine ecosystem, playing a crucial role in ocean health [3].
Looking Ahead
As California continues through the fall months, beachgoers and water recreators should stay informed of shark advisories and heed posted warnings at beaches like Marina State Beach. Continued monitoring by State Parks and local organizations ensures timely information dissemination to protect public safety without unduly fearing these apex predators.

- Chris Cerney on Instagram: "SHARK VIDEO IS REAL: HERE’S WHY
Many people called this Marina State Beach shark video fake. But a second camera, the Surfline camera at The Sanctuary Beach Resort, captured a breach in the same area at the same time, and California State Parks confirmed a shark breached there.
The video reached me first, before anyone checked a surf camera. For it to be fake, it would have to match a real breach in the same area, in the same minute.
State Parks confirmed the breach, not the phone video’s authenticity. Species is not known, but they say it appears to match great white behavior in Monterey Bay in the fall and winter. Shark advisory signs will be posted.
My two reports on this have now been viewed nearly 4 million times across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
Check the advisory signs before entering the water. If you recorded anything Saturday, send it to my tipline: chriscerney.org/upload
